Fukuoka City Postpones Start of School Semester

The Fukuoka City Board of Education announced on April 2 that the start of the new school semester will be delayed. The board agreed that April 6 and 7 were not feasible start dates for the Spring term given the predicted impact of the coronavirus pandemic. Students are now set to return to municipal elementary, junior high, senior high, and special needs schools on April 19. The decision follows announcements made by Fukuoka Prefecture and Kitakyushu City, which urged residents to refrain from going out on weekends for non essential purposes until April 19. The decision has also been made in light of news that the route of transmission in approximately half of the recorded cases in Fukuoka Prefecture remains unclear.

Fukuoka City has seen a significant increase in the number of coronavirus infections among the working age population. Many people in this age group have children currently enrolled at school. With this in mind, officials are considering keeping the Rusu Katei Kokomo-kai child care service open from the morning to help support parents. The city again encouraged locals to avoid places with poor ventilation, crowds of people, and close contact with others. The local government is calling on residents to work together in order to prevent the virus spreading and to create a safe environment for students to return to school.
