Amid the global shift toward electric vehicles (EVs), and in anticipation of the rapid increase in used EV batteries, the need to secure rare metals, and European regulations concerning raw material recycling rates, Fukuoka Prefecture will take the lead nationwide in establishing a used EV battery resource circulation system known as the “Fukuoka Model.” The Fukuoka Recycling Comprehensive Research and Commercialization Center supports the commercialization of new 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) technologies and the development of social systems, and possesses expertise in bringing industry–academia initiatives to market. Northern Kyushu has also formed a major hub for the automotive industry and is promoting initiatives aimed at becoming a “globally preferred development and production base for electrified vehicles.” Leveraging these strengths, the prefecture established “GBNet Fukuoka” in July last year together with related companies that endorsed the prefecture’s call for collaboration. The initiative aims to build the Fukuoka Model and promote the establishment of EV battery manufacturing bases in the region. Source: FIBA
