Nagasaki-based water treatment plant manufacturer Kyowa Kiden Kogyo has been tasked to build the world’s first commercial osmotic power power plant in Higashi Ward this year. Osmotic power generation harnesses the pressure generated when freshwater, due to the difference in salinity, passes through an osmotic membrane into seawater. Fukuoka City has decided to build the new plant based on the results of prototype tests it conducted jointly with Nagasaki City. The power plant will be located on the site of the Uminonakamichi-Nata Desalination Plant, which is Japan’s largest desalination plant. Although the plant will only generate 100kW of power, it can operate 24 hours a day regardless of weather conditions. Power generated by the facility will be sold back to Kyuden.
