Hometown Tax Surge: Miyakonojo Leads

Miyakonojo City in Miyazaki Prefecture led Japan in hometown tax donations for the fiscal year 2022 with a total of 195 billion yen, a 49 billion yen increase from the previous year. The city offered popular rewards like Miyazaki beef, pork, and shochu, leading to a 40% increase in donations to one million cases. Five municipalities in Kyushu ranked in the top 20, including Kamimine Town (108 billion yen, 6th), Iizuka City (90 billion yen, up 38%), and Shibushi City (62 billion yen, up 17%). Nationwide, the total donations increased by 16% to 9654 billion yen, a record high for the third year in a row, with the number of donations reaching a record 51.84 million cases.
