The new JR Hakata Station building known as JR Hakata City, one of the largest commercial facilities operating as a train station building in Japan, opened last week, 10 days before the Kyushu leg of the Shinkansen will begin operation. The last time the facility had been remodeled was 48 years ago. With roughly 100,000 square meters, it is the largest commercial facility in Kyushu, and its sales floor space corresponds to one-third of that in the entire Tenjin district. A total of 1.13 million people visited the site during the first four days it was open.
