JR Kyushu to Develop Rechargeable Battery Trains

JR Kyushu announced it will start work to develop trains powered by rechargeable battery packs as replacements for the diesel engine trains running on tracks without overhead power lines. They plan to build a prototype by 2013 and then go into mass production. The trains will run on alternating current, and will be the first of their kind in Japan.
