JR Kyushu To Replace Yufuin No Mori Train

JR Kyushu said it plans to introduce new rolling stock for its Yufuin no Mori sightseeing train by fiscal 2031, replacing the original set that has been in service since 1989. The train runs between Hakata and Yufuin and Beppu and remains especially popular with international visitors, posting an 82% occupancy rate in March 2026. The current four-car first-generation train has aged, with weaker air conditioning and limited luggage space becoming operational issues. The replacement train is expected to have five cars to improve capacity and passenger comfort. JR Kyushu said the renewal has been under consideration for around a decade and is necessary to maintain one of the company’s flagship tourism services. Source: Nikkei / Yomiuri Shimbun
