Starting next January, the city of Karatsu will provide short-term (three months) health insurance cards to those children under the age of 18 whose parents are delinquent in paying the national health insurance premiums, and who are therefore uninsured. The objective is to maintain their insurance eligibility and to encourage their parents to make the payments. At present, this will apply to 30 children in 22 families in the city. Some Kyushu municipalities, such as Kumamoto City, have already implemented such a program, but Karatsu will be the first city in Saga Prefecture to do so.
