The city of Kitakyushu and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport revealed they would launch a trial this year in which the city would export its treated wastewater to Australia. The water would be sent on ships making the return trip to that country after bringing iron ore to Japan. It will be used to limit the creation of airborne dust in regions with a mining industry, primarily in Western Australia, where there are chronic water shortages. The trial is to determine whether the exports can be profitable.
