Mayor Kenji Kitahashi of Kitakyushu visited Kamaishi in Iwate Prefecture to offer Mayor Takenori Noda of that city Kitakyushu’s cooperation with local reconstruction efforts. Kitakyushu, which has been named a model environmental city by the national government, will provide the Iwate city with its recycling technology to clean up the rubble. There are 28 recycling companies in Kitakyushu, particularly those for discarded automobiles, consumer electronics, and lumber, and as many as 90,000 people visit every year to learn from them.
