Kumamoto earthquake damages more than 200 cultural properties

More than 200 cultural properties in Kumamoto Prefecture have sustained earthquake damage. At the 700-year-old Daiji Zenji temple in Kumamoto City, the left wrist and shoulder of a 3.5-meter Shaka Nyorai statue were damaged and two flanking statues fell. The wooden statue had completed repairs only in March after being damaged in the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake. Restoration requires specialist work and public approval, with owners paying part of the cost, but the temple said it is determined to restore the locally important object of worship.
