A team of researchers at Kumamoto University led by Prof. Yoshihito Kawamura announced the creation of a magnesium alloy with a tensile strength of 512 megapascals, making it the strongest metal in the world. It far surpasses in strength the previous record-holder, another magnesium alloy of 440 megapascals, and is stronger than the duralumin used in aircraft, an aluminum alloy of 505 megapascals. It has two-thirds the weight of duralumin, and so could be used for automobile and aircraft manufacture.
