Kurume Mayor Toshinori Narahara visited JR Kyushu headquarters to request that the one-way fair between Kurume and Hakata Station on the Shinkansen be reduced to 1,000 yen. The railroad has already said it intended to reduce fares for shorter distances to increase rider totals. The fare is currently 1,550 yen, and was as low as 800 yen for a four-ticket book on the limited express before the Kyushu Shinkansen began operation. The next day, JR Kyushu announced they would offer a discount ticket fare for passengers between Hakata Station and the cities of Kurume, Chikugo, and Omuta.
