According to Japan’s internal affairs ministry, the total population of the eight prefectures in Kyushu and Okinawa fell 0.58% year-on-year to 14.06 million as of January 1. For the first time, all eight prefectures saw population decline. However, foreign resident numbers increased 14.6% to 240,000, with all prefectures recording double-digit growth. Fukuoka, Kumamoto, Okinawa, Oita, and Miyazaki posted net population gains through migration, despite natural decreases across the region. Source: Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications
