Kyushu University Startup Raises 1bn Yen For Satellite Development

QPS Research Institute, a startup from Kyushu University, has raised about 1 billion yen in a third-party allocation of new shares to establish a satellite factory and develop a network of 36 satellites to observe the Earth’s surface every 10 minutes. They aim to accelerate satellite development and realize the service after 2025. QPS has experienced setbacks with the launch of their third and fourth satellites but plans to launch the fifth satellite in the spring of 2023 using an aircraft from the US and the sixth satellite after June using a rocket from US-based SpaceX. Their satellites carry synthetic aperture radar (SAR) that can accurately capture the Earth’s surface even on cloudy or rainy days, and the technology is expected to be applied to disaster prevention, fisheries, agriculture, and other fields.
