A study conducted by the Nishinippon Shimbun of the 404 Kyushu prefectural high schools found that only 39—fewer than 10%–had full time teachers in the arts, defined as art, music, and calligraphy. More of the schools had part-time teachers for these subjects. A total of 72 schools, or 17.8%, offered only one course, and the students were not able to choose a course they preferred. This was attributed to the reduction in teaching staff due to the declining number of children and the emphasis in studying for university entrance exams.
