Makurazaki to Replace Airport with Megasolar Plant

The city of Makurazaki in Kagoshima Prefecture announced it will close its airport at the end of March 2013 and build a megasolar power plant on the site. A new company will be formed to operate the plant with financial stakes being taken by Orix and Kyushu Electric Power. The new plant is expected to begin operation in March 2014. It will have an output of 9.86 million kWh, sufficient to provide power for 2,470 households, and the entire output will be sold to Kyushu Electric. Source: Nishinippon Shimbun
