Medical Costs for Elderly Fukuoka Residents Remain High

Annual medical costs for Fukuoka’s elderly population remain one of the highest in Japan. The prefecture marked a record-high ¥1.18 million in the fiscal year of 2019, despite promoting the use of generic drugs and providing consultations for those who saw doctors more than 15 times a month. Some consider that too many medical beds are leading to unnecessary hospitalization in the area. The latest 4.1% reduction in the costs may reflect many people avoiding seeing doctors amid the pandemic and still put Fukuoka second place in the national ranking.
