Miyakonojo and Mimata-cho in Miyazaki Prefecture, and So’o and Shibushi in Kagoshima Prefecture, have created an independent district across prefectural boundaries in accordance with national law to enhance medical, social welfare, and educational services for their residents. It is the fifth such district nationwide and the first in Kyushu. The core city of the district will be Miyakonojo. Planned projects include the construction of a road from Miyakonojo to Shibushi and improving medical care with the Miyakonojo Hospital as the central facility in the district.
