Next Eng. Co., Ltd have begun cultivating rare bananas in Japan. The company, which specializes in underground tunnel construction, aims to cultivate pesticide-free and tasty fruit that can be planted even in cold weather conditions. The produce will be sold as luxury goods and priced at approximately ¥1,000. The cultivation process will take place inside a 3,000 square meter greenhouse in Kawaminami, Miyazaki Prefecture. Sensors and IoT technology will manage the temperature, humidity, and moisture content on the ground. Asia Quest, a Tokyo-based company that specializes in developing management systems, will be involved with the venture. The automated system will help with the lack of workers engaged in the industry. Next Eng. aims to harvest their fruit in eight month cycles. Source: Nikkei Shimbun, 1/17/2018
