Kagoshima Prefecture announced the finding of a mongoose, a specified alien species that has a detrimental effect on the ecology, in Satsumasendai, and thinks several might inhabit that area. The prefecture trapped 115 starting in 2009 after they were found 50 kilometers from Kagoshima City, but there had been no sightings since February 2011. The authorities had been thinking of issuing a proclamation that the mongooses had been exterminated, but that is no longer possible.
