A white-handed gibbon gave birth after being kept alone in a zoo cage for six years. On February 10, a staff member at Kujukushima Zoo & Botanical Garden in Nagasaki Prefecture found the 10-year-old monkey, Momo, and her baby. The father could either be monkeys in the neighboring cages, Momo’s father and three siamangs, or a black-handed gibbon who takes turns to use Momo’s cage during daytime. Her pregnancy’s mystery may be solved through genetic testing after the baby’s weaning in about a year. Source: KTN / Mainichi
