MSDF Minesweeper Sinks Off Munakata After Fire, One Crew Member Missing

A fire broke out on the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force minesweeper Ukushima off the coast of Munakata, Fukuoka Prefecture, on November 10. The vessel capsized after 14 hours of efforts to contain the blaze, eventually sinking on November 11. One crew member, 33-year-old Tatsunori Koga, remains unaccounted for. The Coast Guard’s special rescue divers searched on November 11 and will continue on November 12. Another crew member suffered smoke inhalation but was not critically injured.
