This April Fukuoka City will step up efforts to eliminate illegal bicycle parking in Nakasu, Kyushu’s biggest entertainment district. The City will install 2,000 bicycle parking spaces and designated the entire district as a no bicycle parking zone. It will also cart away illegally parked bikes at night. Some herald the move as a step in the right direction to protect pedestrians, but others who work in Nakasu have expressed concern about the move. “The bicycle parking area is poorly lit and scary,” said a 28-year old restaurant worker. “The City should enact anti-crime measures to make the streets safe to walk at night,” added a 29-year old hostess.
