Fukuoka City’s new Bicycle Ordinance, the first in Japan to contain designated “push your bicycle” zones, goes into effect on Apr. 1. A new push your bicycle zone will be established on the western side of Watanabe-dori Ave, which runs through the heart of Kyushu’s biggest downtown area, Tenjin. There were 3,112 bicycle accidents in 2012, 58 of which involved pedestrians. The City hopes to reduce the number of accidents and improve bicycle etiquette with the new ordinance, which also stipulates children should wear helmets up through junior high school age.
