Fukuoka City revealed plans to establish what it called a “Nigiwai Zone” on Island City, an artificial island in the city’s Hakata Ward, with a new produce market, an area selling locally grown fruits and vegetables, and restaurants and shops offering meals using the produce as ingredients. The objective is to promote Fukuoka foods among the local population and the growing numbers of Asian tourists. The city plans to open the zone in 2014.
