“BioCart” devices (22 machines in total) were installed at immigration control at Fukuoka Airport on April 15. The equipment scans the passports of travelers, takes their photographs and reads their fingerprints before sending the information to the immigration desk to process. Following an increase in people visiting Japan from overseas, the Ministry of Justice introduced the machines to speed up immigration procedures and reduce the workload of immigration officers. Having already been introduced and proven successful in other parts of Japan, the technology is expected to reduce waiting times in Fukuoka Airport from 35 to 20 minutes.
