The Kitakyushu Asian Center for a Low Carbon Society, which promotes the sales of Japanese environmental technology abroad, announced that Nippon Steel Chemical of Tokyo will license its technology for treating the nitrate-nitrogen in the ballast water of ships to Dalian Yudu Environmental Engineering Technology Ltd. of Dalian, China. In the treatment process, the nitrate-nitrogen is converted to nitrogen gas and released into the air. Releasing it into the water could provide too many nutrients for growth and degrade water quality. Nippon Steel Chemical attended commercial discussions in Dalian last year sponsored by the city of Kitakyushu, and became interested in becoming involved with the Chinese company’s plans to rebuild the ballast water treatment plant at Dalian harbor.
