Number of Kitakyushu Districts with High Elderly Population Rising

A survey by the University of Kitakyushu found that as of the end of March this year, a total of 20.6% of the city’s districts at the machi or o-aza level had populations in which at least 33.3% of the residents were 65 years of age or older. They also found that 16 of these districts had an elderly population of greater than 50%. Compared to a previous survey in September 1997, that is a ten-fold increase in the number of districts whose elderly population is one-third, and a three-fold increase in those districts with an elderly population of at least half.
