Okinawa Foreign Resident Population Tops 30,000

The number of foreign residents in Okinawa Prefecture exceeded 30,000 for the first time in 2025, according to a report released on March 17 by Ryugin Research Institute. The total was estimated at 33,516, an increase of about 4,100 from the previous year. Growth was driven by an increase in technical trainees and international students. The report noted that support systems, particularly housing, have not kept pace with the rising population, with some individuals delaying entry due to difficulties securing accommodation. Researchers emphasized the need for improved living conditions and policies to attract and retain foreign residents, as competition with other regions intensifies. The trend highlights both demographic shifts and ongoing challenges in regional integration. Source: Okinawa Times / Nikkei
