Oldest Retail Store in Kyushu to Go Out of Business

The oldest retail establishment in Kyushu, the Kawaguchi Bunten food store of Goto-machi, Nagasaki Prefecture, has applied for bankruptcy. The store’s forerunner, which manufactured and sold salt, opened in 1470. Reports say Kawaguchi Bunten has debts totaling roughly 120 million yen. The store has suffered due to the declining population on Goto island and the competition from large supermarkets and drugstores.
