A recall election was held to determine the fate of Mayor Shinichi Takehara of Akune, Kagoshima Prefecture, and the mayor lost by a narrow 400-vote margin. Takehara created turmoil in the Akune city government over the past six months by ruling by decree and bypassing City Council entirely, claiming that they were wasting the citizens’ money. An election will be held for his successor in January, and Takehara plans to run.
