Rise in Semiconductor and Auto Production Boosts Kyushu’s Economy

The Kyushu Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry reported a 3.4% rise in the 2022 industrial production index. This second consecutive annual increase was bolstered by a healthy semiconductor industry and recovering auto production as constraints like the semiconductor shortage and Shanghai’s lockdown eased. Five out of 13 industries grew, with general-purpose, production, and business machinery industries leading with an 18.8% increase, driven by robust production of semiconductor manufacturing equipment and industrial robots. Regular automobile production also led to a 5.5% rise in the transport machinery industry. However, seven industries declined, with ceramics and stone product industry dropping by 8.3% due to sluggish production of fine ceramics and general structural materials. Despite the current robust semiconductor and auto production, the Bureau Director warned that the future is uncertain given the global economic downturn. Source: Kyushu Bureau of Economy / Nikkei
