Saga Prefecture revealed that it would borrow from financial institutions 2.87 billion yen of the 15 billion yen in general operating expenses required for the Kyushu International Heavy Particle Beam Cancer Treatment Center due to open in Tosu next May. The prefecture initially did not envision borrowing any money, but was forced to change its plans due the lack of private contributions and other funding. The prefecture attributed this to the poor economy. The funds will be provided by 10 institutions. Fukuoka Prefecture is also providing 590 million yen in support to the structure.
