The Fukuoka Customs office released information on the number of Japanese going abroad from and the number of foreigners arriving at Fukuoka Airport and the Port of Hakata during the Golden Week holidays. The figures show that 32,660 Japanese departed from those facilities, a 27% year-on-year increase. In contrast, the number of foreigners entering Japan from those facilities fell 15.2% to 15,560. The customs office said that the higher number of Japanese traveling abroad could be traced to lower fares as a result of the reduction of fuel surcharges. Meanwhile, the higher yen and lower South Korean won discouraged travel from that country.
