Sinkhole Opens Near Hakata Station, Fukuoka, Japan

At 05:15 this morning, a sinkhole opened up near the intersection of Hakata Ekimae 2-chome near Hakata Station, causing electricity outages in the local area and disrupting traffic around the station. The sinkhole is not thought to be related to tectonic activity and is located near construction works for the extension of the Nanakuma Subway Line. No injuries reported, but there will be continued disruption to traffic for an extended period of time. Other construction areas are now being checked as well as gas lines in the area.

The City issued evacuation recommendations for the following areas at 09:45:
• Hakata Ekimae 2-3-12, 2-3-14
• Hakata Ekimae 2-5-5, 2-5-7
• Hakata Ekimae 3-25-21
• Hakata Ekimae 3-26-1, 3-26-29

The following locations have been designated as evacuation centers (Katakasu Kuminkan, Higashi-Sumiyoshi Community Center) Please stay tuned for any further information.
