South Pacific Seaweed Beds Expanding in Kyushu

The Fisheries Research Agency released an interim report on its study of seaweed abnormalities near Kyushu, which found that beds of seaweed containing varieties found usually in the South Pacific or near the Equator have been discovered in the sea off Miyazaki and Nagasaki Prefectures. These seaweed beds already had been found near Kagoshima Prefecture. The agency suggests the possibility that water temperatures in the winter are rising with global warming. They are concerned about the possible impact this may have on the fishing industry.
