Subway Stir-Fry: Chef’s Knives Mistaken for Wielding Weapon

There was a slice of drama in Fukuoka City on the 19th when a routine subway ride turned into a whodunit, all thanks to a 911 call reporting a potential blade-wielding passenger. Police responded to find a man carrying a bag with a knife inside. Before you could say “culinary crisis”, it turned out that the culprit was merely a chef, armed with nothing but his culinary tools.

At the crack of 2 pm on the 19th, the Fukuoka Subway’s Transportation Control Center received a report that an individual on a subway train was armed with a blade. The train, heading from Fukuoka Airport Station to Meinohama Station, was stopped at Higashi-Hie Station. There law enforcement boarded the train and spoke with the man holding the suspicious bag.

But instead of a subway supervillain, they found a chef, whose cooking knives were safely tucked away in a special bag inside his carry-on. He had briefly taken them out just to rearrange them. Upon hearing his explanation, the police quickly simmered down the situation, concluding that our chef was not a threat, merely a man equipped to julienne.

Naturally, no injuries were reported, however, the ripple effect of the drama on the subway did lead to a brief suspension of operations across the entire Airport Line and Hakozaki Line. Source: NHK
