The first auction of the season for the “Egg of the Sun,” a premium brand of mangoes from Miyazaki Prefecture, took place on April 13th, setting a record high price of ¥600,000 for two mangoes. The winning bid came from a fruit shop in Fukuoka City. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the branding of the fully ripe “Egg of the Sun” mango. It is Miyazaki Prefecture’s pride, meeting strict criteria such as a sugar content of at least 15 degrees and a weight of over 350 grams. The first auction for the Egg of the Sun mangoes began at 7 a.m. on the 13th at the market. The highest price traded was a record-breaking ¥600,000 for a case of two mangoes, won by a fruit shop at the Iwataya main store in Tenjin, Fukuoka City. About six hours after the auction, at around 2 p.m., the Egg of the Sun mangoes were promptly displayed in the store. The price tag was an astonishing ¥600,000. The store also sells other mangoes starting at around ¥12,000 per piece. The Egg of the Sun mangoes, known for their melt-in-your-mouth sweetness, will reach their peak shipment period in late May.
