Sweet Start for Fukuoka’s Watermelon Season

The only watermelon-producing district in Fukuoka city, the Kitazaki district in Fukuoka’s Nishi Ward, has started shipping its crop. On June 26th, about 600 “Kitazaki watermelons,” a special product harvested by three local farms, were brought to the collection center. Workers then sorted the watermelons by size and grade before packing them into boxes. According to the farmers, due to rainfall and lower temperatures in May, when the watermelon flowers begin to bloom, the number of fruits decreased this year. However, they reported no damage from pests, and the watermelons have developed a delicious flavor. They are expected to be available in supermarkets throughout Fukuoka Prefecture until mid-August.
