Tamana Tempts New Residents with Shinkansen Subsidy


With a station on the Kyushu Shinkansen line, the city of Tamana, Kumamoto Prefecture is offering a subsidy of 30,000 yen a month to people willing to relocate from Fukuoka or other locations to pay for the 32-minute commute to Fukuoka City. The subsidies would be provided for five years, for a maximum total of 1.8 million yen. This is the highest subsidy of its type by any local government in Kyushu, and the second-highest in Japan. Tamana has started to program in the hope of becoming a Fukuoka City bedroom community.
