Ten Rules Put in Place to Protect Umigame

Japan’s Ministry of the Environment recently put in place 10 rules to protect the umigame, a type of large turtle that lays its eggs on the Nagata Beach in Yakushima-cho, Kagoshima Prefecture. The rules particularly apply to entry on the beach at night. They were created to deal with the sharp increase in tourism to the location after Yakushima was declared a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site. They are thought to be the first rules of their kind in Japan.
