Kyuden Mirai Energy, a subsidiary of Kyushu Electric Power, has launched a demonstration of tidal power generation off the coast of the Goto Islands in Nagasaki Prefecture. The 1,100-kilowatt generator, installed on the 40-meter-deep seabed between Hisaka and Naru Islands, began test operations earlier this year and is now connected to the local power grid.
This is Japan’s first installation of a tidal generator with over 1,000 kW output. The annual output is estimated at 2.41 million kilowatt-hours, enough to power around 800 households. The project, commissioned by the Ministry of the Environment, aims to collect data through FY2025 to assess feasibility and performance. Source: Nagasaki Shimbun
