Tourist Train Accident in Kumamoto

A tourist train collided with a large car at a railway crossing between Sakamoto and Haki Stations in Yatsushiro, Kumamoto at approximately 10:15 on Nov. 3. A section of the Kawasemi Yamasemi 2 train, which had been traveling along the JR Kyushu-operated Hisatsu Line, was left inoperable. The crash left 11 of the 67 passengers on board with minor injuries, the youngest of whom is said to be eight years of age. The cause of the accident is believed to be related to problems with the alarm system and gate at the railway crossing. Trains running in both directions were cancelled for the rest of the day as a result. Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the accident. Source: Asahi Shimbun, 11/3/2017
