Typhoon #6 Targets Fukuoka: Residents Urged to Prepare

Typhoon #6 is projected to approach Fukuoka Prefecture between the 9th and 10th. As the storm continues its trajectory, residents are urged to stay updated and take early precautions. As of 6 pm, the typhoon is slowly heading north, located 160 kilometers east of Amami City in Kagoshima Prefecture. With a central pressure of 970 hectopascals, the storm boasts wind speeds of up to 30 meters per second and gusts reaching 40 meters per second. Winds of over 25 meters per second are occurring within a 200-kilometer radius from the storm’s center, affecting parts of the Amami region in Kagoshima Prefecture.

As it approaches Fukuoka between the 9th and 10th, rough seas accompanied by swells are anticipated, with potential risks of heavy rainfall and storm surges. Rainfall is predicted to range between 100-150 millimeters in the northern Kyushu and Chikuho regions and 50-100 millimeters in the Fukuoka and Chikugo regions on the 9th. This is expected to increase to between 100-200 millimeters across the prefecture by the evening of the 10th.

Wind intensity is also expected to increase. On the 8th, wind speeds are predicted to reach 16 meters per second along the Seto Inland side of the northern Kyushu region, 15 meters per second in coastal areas of Fukuoka and Chikugo, and up to 10 meters per second inland. Gusts may reach 20-30 meters per second. By the 9th, these numbers are projected to rise further, especially in coastal areas.

Wave heights are also set to rise. On the 8th, waves could reach between 2 and 2.5 meters off the coast of Fukuoka, increasing to a significant 6 meters by the 9th, leading to very rough seas.

The Meteorological Agency has issued warnings for high winds, large waves, landslides, flooding in low-lying areas, and river overflow. There’s also an alert for storm surges, lightning strikes, and tornadoes. Due to the slow movement of the typhoon, the impacts from heavy rain and strong winds may linger. Residents are advised to check hazard maps for local disaster risks and evacuation points and secure outdoor items indoors or fix them in place. Source: NHK
