Typhoon Warning: Danger Escalates in Northern Kyushu

Typhoon Number 6 is expected to approach Fukuoka Prefecture closest between the evening of the 9th and the morning of the 10th. In northern Kyushu, a band of linear precipitation is expected to form from the night of the 8th to the morning of the 10th, with the risk of disaster suddenly escalating. The meteorological office is calling for caution against storm winds, high waves, and landslides.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, as of 6 p.m. on the 8th, the typhoon was about 70 kilometers south of Yakushima in Kagoshima Prefecture, moving north-northwest at roughly 10 kilometers per hour. With the typhoon’s northward movement, winds within the prefecture have been strengthening, with a maximum instantaneous wind speed of 17.8 meters observed in Asakura city before noon.

The typhoon is expected to continue moving north across the western sea of Kyushu, and approach Fukuoka Prefecture closest between the night of the 9th and the morning of the 10th. The influence of the typhoon body and surrounding rain clouds may cause a “band of linear precipitation” in northern Kyushu, raising the risk of disaster.

The amount of rain expected to fall in the 24 hours up until the evening of the 9th is about 80 millimeters in some parts of the prefecture, and between 100 to 200 millimeters in the 24 hours up until the evening of the 10th. Winds are also expected to strengthen, with maximum wind speeds forecasted to be 20 meters in coastal waters and 18 meters on land. Maximum instantaneous wind speeds are expected to reach 30 meters. Waves are predicted to reach 5 meters in some areas, with expected swell.

Due to the slow movement of the typhoon, the effects of heavy rain and stormy winds may linger. The meteorological office is calling for caution against storm winds, high waves, landslides, flooding in low areas, river overflow, and flooding. Attention is also required for storm surges, lightning, and violent gusts of wind. Early preparation is advised, such as checking the hazard map for local disaster risk and evacuation spots, storing outside items indoors, and revising plans. Source: NHK
