The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) and JR Kyushu is preparing to reopen the JR Hohi Line fully by the end of the fiscal year 2020. The 27-km route of the Hohi Line between Higo-Ozu Station and Aso Station has been closed since the area was hit by the Kumamoto Earthquake in 2016. MLIT, JR Kyushu and Kumamoto Prefecture recently set up a committee to accelerate the reconstruction and has decided on a combined plan to repair the railway as well as to construct disaster prevention facilities. With the scheduled reopening of other infrastructures including national road no.57 and Shin Aso Bridge in 2020, this will be a major step for the area. Source: Kumamoto Daily News, 4/12/2019
