Pre-research for the construction of a Shimonoseki-Kitakyushu Road was released by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism on Mar. 19. Minister Keiichi Ishii revealed the proposed plans after meeting the prefectural governors of Fukuoka and Yamaguchi, who expressed support for the idea. The Shimonoseki-Kitakyushu Road will be the third route to connect the islands of Honshu and Kyushu. While aging of the Kanmon Tunnel and Kanmon Bridge has become a matter of concern, the importance of securing a new route cannot be ignored. The ministry will make an official announcement about this matter after finalizing the national budget. Source: Yomiuri Shimbun, 3/19/2019
