Kurume Kasuri, an important intangible cultural asset of Japan, is predominantly produced in the Chikugo area of Fukuoka Prefecture. Once a year, Kurume Kasuri studios open their doors to the public, offering a unique opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes glimpse of this traditional craft.
On this special day, you’ll have the chance to observe artisans at work and even try your hand at weaving or dyeing fabric in the characteristic indigo color that defines Kurume Kasuri. You can also take advantage of discounted prices to shop for textiles, accessories, and clothing for both men and women.
The idyllic countryside where these studios are located makes for a pleasant outing. Rent a bicycle for ¥500 and enjoy a leisurely ride between the studios. Light meals featuring local ingredients will be available, allowing you to spend the entire day exploring at the Chikugo Village Kasuri Open House.
The event will also feature sales of coffee, sweets, vegetables, and other items at the storefronts of the kasuri studios, adding to the charming ambiance and giving visitors the opportunity to support local producers. It’s a day of immersion in culture, crafts, and the beauty of the Chikugo region.
