The Fukuoka City Museum is hosting its 23rd annual exhibition on Hakata Gion Yamakasa, coinciding with the Yamakasa season. This year’s theme is “Yamakasa Paintings,” featuring around 30 items, including those passed down by the Kuroda family, the lords of the Fukuoka Domain. Today, Yamakasa are typically divided into carrying Yamakasa and decorative Yamakasa, but the exhibition provides a glimpse into the Edo period when tall, dazzling Yamakasa raced through the streets. Through these historical paintings, visitors can explore the history and tradition of Yamakasa creation over the years.
